EGG CLEANER

In order to make eggs look nice at the market (and ensure that they were sold), the pre-dawn collection of eggs was followed by monotonous hand cleaning to remove unsightly smudges and dirt. Alton H. Wilde's 1937 egg cleaner was an early attempt to automate the procedure. Each egg was placed in a cup lined with scrubbing material. When the lid was closed and locked, the eggs were surrounded by the material. The handle turned each egg cup and the scrubbing material—and in a few seconds, the eggs were clean. The machine could be made with as many egg cups as the farmer wanted, and if further speed seemed necessary, a motor could be attached to the handle.

Today, when a chicken lays an egg, it is caught in a chute and deposited on a conveyor belt. The conveyor belt whisks the eggs through a cleaning spray, separates them according to size, and deposits them in the containers. An egg hardly has a chance to get dirty.

This short wooden chair had straps that buckled on so that it could be carried about with ease. When in use, it ensured that the user was at just the right height for work.
